I am Theodore Roosevelt and I am ANGRY!
Not angry the way politicians get angry — carefully, strategically, with one eye on the camera and the other on the polling numbers.
ANGRY the way a free citizen gets angry when someone is picking his neighbor’s pocket in broad daylight and calling it liberation!

Let me tell you what I see.
I see the wealthiest men in the history of human civilization sitting in YOUR government. Running YOUR agencies. Making decisions that put money — their money — directly into their own pockets.
And they have the audacity — the BREATHTAKING audacity — to tell you they are doing it for YOU!

In my day J.P. Morgan came to MY White House and suggested we settle the Northern Securities case gentleman to gentleman. Man to man. His lawyers talking to my lawyers.
I looked him in the eye and I told him — Mr. Morgan, you are not my peer in this matter. You are a defendant.

Because men like Morgan — men like the broligarchs running your government today — have operated so long above the law that they have forgotten the law exists!
They have forgotten that in this Republic — THIS Republic, bought with the blood of men at Lexington and Gettysburg and the Argonne Forest — no man is above the law. No fortune is large enough. No political connection is strong enough. No amount of purchased immunity is permanent enough.
We broke Standard Oil!
Ninety percent of American petroleum. The most powerful corporation on earth. The most politically connected combination in the history of this nation.
We broke it.

Not with supermen. Not with miracles. With citizens. Organized, informed, furious citizens who decided that what was being done to their Republic was simply — unacceptable.
Ida Tarbell — a woman with a pen and a notebook and the stubborn insistence on documented truth — did more to break Standard Oil than my entire Justice Department. She showed ordinary Americans not that Rockefeller was rich — they knew that — but precisely, specifically, documented chapter and verse, HOW he was using that wealth to rob them.
The American people read it and they rose up.
That is all it takes, my friends. That is ALL it ever takes.
The truth. Plainly told. To citizens willing to act on it.

Now I look at what you face today and I will not insult your intelligence by pretending it is simple. The men you are fighting are richer than Rockefeller ever dreamed of being. They own the platforms that replaced your newspapers. They have written themselves into your government directly rather than purchasing it through intermediaries.
They have been clever. I will give them that.
But clever is not the same as invincible!

They control the platforms but they do not control your conversations at the kitchen table! They have captured the regulatory agencies but they have not captured your jury boxes or your ballot boxes — not yet!
They have purchased legislators but they have not yet purchased the fundamental American character that looks at a bully — regardless of his net worth — and says:
NOT HERE.
NOT IN MY REPUBLIC.
NOT ON MY WATCH.

I preached the strenuous life my entire career. Not because difficulty is pleasant. But because a life without struggle produces neither character nor achievement worth having.
Your generation has been given a struggle worthy of your character.
A struggle that will define what this Republic actually is — not what it claims to be in bronze and marble, but what it actually IS when the testing comes.
I believe you are equal to it.
I did not cross the ocean of death and return to this extraordinary moment to watch the American people surrender their birthright to men who mistake their bank balances for mandates from the Almighty!
